Creating Your Own Website for Free

From LoveToKnow Web-Design

Creating your own website for free doesn’t mean you need an art degree or a computer programming degree. You don’t even need to know one line of code. All you need is your imagination, a computer and either a program or access to a hosting company that allows you to create your own website for free.

Usually, when you sign up with a web hosting company, they give you the option to use one of their own web-based programs, or let you upload pages using FTP methods. If you choose to use web hosting services, finding the web host that’s best for you can pose a problem.

  • Go-Daddy. Paying for your domain is the best way to go if want to have a .com or .net extension. Go-Daddy usually offers inexpensive prices to register and store your domain name, but they also offer you a quick way to get a website up in minutes. Pick a template, type in some text and add some pictures. You’re done!
  • Tripod. Through Lycos, Tripod can get you started with the free plan. The free plan lets you use the Easy Site Builder software and gives you 20MB of space to store your website. That amount of space is perfect for a blog, picture site or basic text web site. You get access to a number of templates and over 10,000 royalty-free images to use. Also, if you use Microsoft Frontpage or Expressions to build your web page, then you can directly load them in from the Microsoft program. It is 100% compatible.

There are quite a few programs that provide you with what’s called a WYSIWYG interface. That stands for What You See Is What You Get. Basically, the program works like a word processor where you input your text, import pictures and insert other dynamics without knowing any programming techniques. The way your page looks on the screen is how the page will look on the Internet. Most programs allow you to preview your page so you can make adjustments as you go. The following list are a few programs that are available for creating your own website for free.

  • Microsoft Publisher and Word. If you have either of these programs installed on your computer, then you already have a way to create your own website for free. The one good thing about these programs is that you can start with a blank page or you can use any number of templates. Publisher has more options to fine-tune your webpage, so if you just want a basic page up and running within minutes, then use Microsoft Word.
  • Kompozer. Another WYSIWYG program is Kompozer. The only job of this program is to help you edit websites. You start with a blank page and work from there. Even though there are no templates to start with, you have total freedom to create what you want. There is a slight learning curve, so practice making a basic web page so you can better understand website formatting and how to lay out pictures and tables. Kompozer uses a tabbed system to organizing web pages so you can work with all the pages of your web site at once. Kompozer is an open source program so you can create your own website with a free program. You can find it at Kompozer.

Some other programs you can use:

  • Nvu. While Nvu is a HTML text editing program, its best functionality is within the WYSIWYG editor. You can create CSS style sheets and even program with the XHTML code, if you desire.
  • SeaMonkey. Made by the same people who provides Internet users with Firefox, SeaMonkey gives you the editor as well as a browser, an email program and an FTP client so you can easily upload your web pages all within the same program.
  • Selida. For a simple program that can be used by beginners and professionals alike, Selida is the answer.
