Enable Javascript in Internet Explorer

From LoveToKnow Web-Design

There are many websites on the Internet that depend upon scripting in order to display properly, so you'll need to know how to enable Javascript in Internet Explorer if you want to visit those websites with IE.

Why Enable Javascript in Internet Explorer?

As the Internet grows and more of the population take advantage of social networks and other online tools to conduct their daily business, computer and network security is always a critical issue for not only large companies but also for small families. While client-side scripting is definitely a security concern, the widespread use of Javascript throughout the Internet makes it nearly impossible to disable Javascript for Internet users.

Is Enabling Javascript a Security Concern?

Computer viruses, malware and adware threaten your personal, private information that may be stored on your home computer systems, and they also threaten the security of your financial and business information on large data storage systems at credit card companies and banks. Keeping both small and large computer systems secure from hackers and identity thieves is one reason why many security experts disable most client-side scripting capabilities on the browsers used within corporate networks. However, while corporate IT security may disable browser scripting like ActiveX, which compiles and runs itself on a client PC, very few security groups go so far as to disable Javascript capabilities. They enable Javascript in Internet Explorer, Firefox and other browsers that employees use because most websites both on the Internet and most Intranets make use of some form of Javascripting. While you should be concerned about downloading and installing ActiveX controls, Javascript is not a serious security threat and you should leave it enabled if you want most of the web pages you visit to work correctly.

What to Do When Javascript is Disabled

So, you've probably visited a few websites using Internet Explorer and you keep getting a warning that you need to enable Javascript to view the website correctly. Maybe you even searched through the Internet Explorer settings, but can't seem to locate where you can enable Javascript. If you follow the procedure below, you can enable Javascript support in your browser if you're using Internet Explorer version 6 or higher.

  1. Click on Tools from the Internet Explorer menu
  2. Within this menu, select Internet Options
  3. Inside Internet Options, click on the Security tab
  4. On this screen you'll see various "zones", make sure "Internet" is selected and then click on the button labeled Custom Level...
  5. Scroll all the way down the list until you come to a section labeled "Scripting." Under this section, there will be an item labeled "Active scripting" - select "Enable"

By enabling "Active Scripting," you are allowing any website you visit to run client-side Javascript within your browser. Since Javascript is inherently not very powerful as a scripting language, you have nothing to worry about. However, if allowing this capability for every website that you visit makes you nervous, you may want to consider enabling it only for the websites that you visit often.

Enabling Javascript for Select Websites

If you'd rather only enable Javascript capabilities for specific websites, and still block it when you're visiting the rest of the Internet, you'll need to follow the procedure above up to the "Custom Level" page. Once you're there, follow this procedure to enable Javascript for specific sites.

  1. Make sure Trusted sites is selected
  2. Click on the "Sites..." button
  3. Type the URL into the field for adding websites to the zone, then click "Add" and "OK"

While this is a safer approach, you'll still find that you come across new websites often that don't work until you enable Javascript for that site. However, this is a tradeoff for the additional security.

More Information

Sometimes, when you first install a new browser or upgrade to a new version, the default settings have Javascript disabled. Following the procedures listed above will enable Javascript again so that features like pop-up windows, certain types of forms and other interactive website tools will work properly.
