Free Guestbook HTML
From LoveToKnow Web-Design
One of the key parts of any website is the ability for visitors to offer feedback, and by inserting some free guestbook HTML code on your front page you can change your site from static to dynamic with just one link.
Free Guestbook HTML is Just the Tip of the Iceberg
Of course, there is a lot more to a guestbook than just the HTML. Usually Javascript or a PHP or CGI script runs the server-side mechanisms that keep a website visitor's input in order – both inputting the entry and other information into a database, and also calling back and displaying the information when people visit it. Usually there's also a control panel which controls the appearance and features of the guestbook (more on that later) that is only accessible by the website owner.
If you have enough control of your website, and also have the expertise in HTML and PHP to configure that kind of front end and back end, you can find a variety of scripts on the web at places like [Hotscripts]. These free, open-source scripts usually have fairly clear installation instructions.
Check Your Server!
The fact is, you may already have free guestbook HTML and PHP features built into your hosting package. Be sure to check with the server that hosts your website, and see if they offer a guestbook package along with other common options such as hit counters, forums, and site statistics. It may be as easy as a few clicks to have guestbook functionality on your site.
Most common Microsoft servers and Apache servers have guestbook PHP and ASP scripts included already. You will want to make sure that your server is upgraded to the latest versions of PHP, because sometimes guestbooks can be used as gateways for malware to get into the site and cause mischief. Whether or not those attacks destroy your data or worse, using your server to launch attacks against other sites is still a bad thing.
If you're not feeling confident in your ability to secure your guestbook, another solution might be to host it on another server entirely.
Hosting Your Guestbook Elsewhere
There are a great many hosting services that offer versions of a guestbook, some supported by ads, others through the hope that you'll upgrade to a more advanced version of their software. One example of this is UltraGuest. That site offers many excellent features, such as:
- SPAM filters
- The ability to ban IP addresses that send spam
- Custom fields (for more information on your visitors)
- Email messages when you get a new guest
- A google map showing the locations of visitors to your site
- Multiple language support.
- Customization of the colors and header of your site.
There are even more features, but the most useful one is probably the fact that the service is 100% free. In order to get your own UltraGuest guestbook, you have to go through the following process:
- Sign up at their site, providing information about your website that you plan to link the guestbook too.
- Confirm your email and login to your account.
- Configure the heading and theme of your site. Ultraguest lets you control fonts, colors, inserting images – in fact, if you understand HTML and CSS you can use all sorts of customizable options on your guestbook. Or you can leave it as the default and have a very clean and professionally simple layout.
- Finally, copy and paste the free guestbook HTML code into your website. This will provide a view guestbook, sign guestbook, and a link back to the UltraGuest site (which you can remove if you like) for your site.
That's all there is to it. The basic service does have some unobtrusive ads, but it's easy enough to upgrade to a no-ads version by paying a little money. If you want to install the HTML on a Blogger.com site, there are special instructions, but they are equally easy.
With this many options for a free guestbook, there's no reason not to have one on your site and let your visitors speak their mind..
