Free Web Page Templates
From LoveToKnow Web-Design
Free web page templates are made for people who need a website fast but don't have the resources to hire a custom designer. They are usually easy to download and easy to implement on your site. Using one of thousands of free templates may be the ticket to getting your business online quickly.
What's Included With Free Web Page Templates
There are at least two things needed, at a minimum, for any free web template:
- HTML – Since web browsers speak hypertext markup language, you will need at least one file (maybe more) that are in HTML format. These will often contain an "index.html" page, which is usually the "root" or "home" page of your site (in other words, the first page people see when they type in your URL). There may also be other pages included in the template as well, depending on what kind of template it is – for example, a school website may have a "current_events.html" web page. It's important that you don't rename those extra pages, because usually they are linked to the home page already. That's the point of using free web page templates – so that you don't have to redo the code.
- Images – Competition is fierce in the web 2.0 world and you need a website that has professional, clean, and non-distracting graphics. The good news is that most web templates have this, and not only include the images in small and easily-downloadable sections, but also have the images clearly linked with the HTML files. Some web templates will even include Photoshop versions of the web graphics, so that they can be changed if you or someone else who is capable feels like editing them. Like the HTML pages, it is important that these images are not renamed or moved from their directory in relation to the HTML files.
Some templates include other elements with the free templates, things that may or may not be needed by your site. These can include:
- Cascading Style Sheets – the best templates will control appearances separate from content using CSS files.
- READ ME Files – The ReadMe file is usually for the benefit of you, the web page owner, not the people on the site, so they will not usually have to be uploaded onto the server. However, they are worth reading, both for the directions in implementing the free page templates (usually just "upload to the server") and also to be aware of any terms or conditions the designer may have put on the use of the template.
Where to Find Them
Many designers want to showcase their work, or just have a passion for good design, and so finding free page templates is very easy with a simple Google search. However, it is important to evaluate which places actually offer free templates and which ones are actually simply portals advertising templates for purchase – or worse, that are trying to trick you into downloading viruses or malware.
Three sites that are good sources for free page templates are:
- FreeWebsiteTemplates.com – The templates from this site are very complete, professional, exciting, and include .psd and clear instructions. They also have a wide variety of styles, colors, and types of site templates to choose from.
- Open Source Web Design – The contributors to this site are part of the Open Source movement which believes that code, whether programming or HTML, should be a shared and collaborative experience. As a result this is a very active community, and not only are the templates very complete, they also have reviews, comments, ratings, and many other tools to help you find exactly the right one.
- Steve's Templates – While he would love for you to buy one of his premium templates, Steve is glad to provide you with samples of his professional work for use on either personal or business sites. He does, however, insist that you agree to his terms, which are basically that you will not re-distribute the templates and that you will link back to his site.
While professional design should eventually be the goal of any business, using free templates can give your site a professional look while you build its presence on the web.
