While there are many kinds of free Xanga HTML, music remains one of the most popular elements of the social networking site.

Xanga's Wandering History

Xanga.com began in 1999 as one of those grand ideas that had a little too much focus to last. The original plan was for the site to simply be a music and picture weblog site, where people could put their own music or images (preferably not copyrighted) up online, and at the same time they could share their reviews and ideas about that media with each other.

While was a noble effort, in the grand scheme of the web (especially after the "dot.com bubble" burst) it did not prove to be a viable source of revenue by itself. Xanga began expanding its services, first with more space on their servers and then with the addition of extra features:

  • Weblog services were steadily expanded to include things like the ability to "subscribe" to each other's posts on music or whatever, similar to an RSS feed. For a short time anyone was able to subscribe, but this "anonymous following" was troubling to many users and it was discontinued in 2003
  • Photoblogging elements are very similar to the type of service Flickr offers, with the inclusion of "moblogging" (mobile photo blogging via cell phone) in their "Pulse" service, released in 2007.
  • Audio and Video Blogs – realizing that people might want to be more involved than simply posting music that other people had created and writing about it, in 2006 Xanga introduced an audio blog feature whereby people could comment using multimedia.
  • Xanga eventually integrated instant messaging, profiles, and other common social networking tools into the larger site.

While these expanded services may seem quite useful, Xanga has run into the difficulty that there are many other services that also offer these same features – and unfortunately for Xanga, the services that focused on a single aspect (such as Flickr) did very well, and one or two other social media juggernauts (like MySpace and FaceBook) that were similar in layout to Xanga ended up dominating market share.

Xanga has continued to grow though, mainly through its core base of music and image fans who enjoy both the site's social media capabilities and the freedom to customize their pages using free Xanga HTML. Music, images, photos, everything can be customized to suit the personality of the user, something not offered through Facebook. More than that, people began sharing the templates they created, both freely and also for a small cost, like any professional designer.

An Example of Free Xanga HTML: Music Fan

MCR Majere is both a designer and a music lover, and she has published several custom Xanga layouts such as Fantasy. One thing that stands out in her Xanga layouts (and others) in contrast to MySpace is their clean look, with easily accessible links to music and other parts of the blog.

Taking a look at the code for the layout of her site, which is devoted to the group My Chemical Romance, even novice HTML coders will see many familiar codes for color, images, text, and links. The page has the same document structure of almost any other HTML page – with Headers containing javascript and meta tags, followed by a Body section with actual content. In fact, Xanga itself is so friendly to HTML that there is no real proprietary code involved.

Customizing Your Xanga

Changing the look and feel of your Xanga page is very easy – in fact, there's a whole section of the site called Look and Feel that has step-by-step instructions. You can also simply log into Xanga and, at the bottom of your Weblog, click on the "design" link – which would open up a page with clearly identified boxes for you to put in your Xanga template HTML.

Whether it's linking to music, images, video, or just a blog entry, there's very little that's much more complicated than simple links and the occasional table. As your skills increase with things like CSS, you can use Xanga as a showcase of great design and social media savvy.
