Golden Web Free Fonts
From LoveToKnow Web-Design
Based in Italy, Golden Web free fonts are a good example of someone using the free resources of the internet to both provide a service and also make some money.
Getting IT From Italy
One of the first things you'll notice about the site is that there are lots of subheadings in Italian, though you can click on the "English" option in the upper right and get most of the site in that language.
It speaks well of the site's designers that it isn't really necessary to worry about the language – the site resources and links are very, very clear, with the fonts being the first thing to come up when you go to that section of the site.
The Tricky Thing About Fonts
There are a couple of aspects of Golden Web free fonts that are done really well. For one thing, the fonts are organized alphabetically, with an index on the left. So if you know that you want - for example, Boldoni font - you can click on the B's and go to that section of the site. With over a thousand free fonts on the site, it's a useful tool.
Even better is the fact that the fonts all have little illustrations of lettering for each one, usually the name of the font in that typeface. Why is this a good thing?
- It keeps you from downloading a font you thought was the right one, but wasn't ("Boldoni? No, I wanted Britannic!")
- It provides you with the opportunity to see the differences in font family members (such as copperplate gothic, bold, and light).
- It provides the serendipitous opportunity to discover new fonts by just having them fill the page.
It can be fun to just browse through the fonts, seeing the amazing ways that fontographers have shaped the letters. Remember that while fonts can be a lot of fun, one of the biggest mistakes novice designers make is putting too many fonts on the same page.
Copyright is also a bit shady on the GoldenWeb font. They announce on the page that the fonts "are under the 'Freeware Fonts' folder in .ttf format for Windows systems" (TTF is "True Type Font" format). Technically, this means that their fonts are all available on any Windows sytem. However, they've put quite a few more fonts in the list, either from other "free" sources and also submitted through their "Submit a Font" link at the bottom of the page.
There is, however, the possibility that the fonts are copyrighted and shouldn't be freely downloadable. Their explanation for this is offering to take fonts down if the copyright holder contacts them – which is kind of a lazy way to exercise copyright protection, but does technically stay legal.
Golden Web Free Fonts and Much More
GoldenWeb offers more than just fonts. The site can be a resource for many other diversions and tools as well:
- Classified Ads – While they are not Craigslist, and are often in Italian, a wide variety of goods and services are advertised.
- Games – Flash and Javascript games are on the site for that quick diversion.
- Icons – Used for interface design or just to spruce up your desktop, these free icons are usually gotten by right-clicking and saving the images to your desktop in .ico, .bmp, or .gif format.
- Newsgroups – Linking to many subjects, this is reminiscent of the old Bulletin Board Services of the early web.
- Themes – Designed for Windows computers, the themes range from cars to fantasy, and while they seem easy enough, it should be remembered that themes can carry malware that can put viruses on your computer.
- Wallpaper – Many desktop pictures, ranging from cute animals to exotic locations to sexy bikinis, are available on the site. Again, it is possible that some of these images are copyrighted.
- Freeware Utilities – The programs link has items such as WinZip, a compression utility, that are either free or shareware.
With this many items to choose from, it is easy to see why GoldenWeb.it is worth a visit.
