HTML Source for a Guestbook

From LoveToKnow Web-Design

You can find an HTML source for a guestbook on the Internet for download or for simply copying and pasting into your web page design program. Whether you use Frontpage, Dreamweaver or the open source program Kompozer, the HTML source for a guestbook you choose will fit right into the program and work seamlessly with your other pages. Since guestbooks are easy to create, why not add one to your website to get feeback or see who is visiting your site?

HTML!

Manual or Scripts

Two ways exists for creating a guestbook. The first is to code a web page with basic HTML commands to create fields for users to input text and then have that text e-mailed to you. Then, you can add that information manually to a basic web page that you generate with simple commands. This was the old way, and it still works for many HTML programmers learning the language and cutting their teeth on web page building.

Now, with XHTML and cascading style sheets, you can use a number of different methods to program a guestbook once and have the code do all the work. From accepting the information to creating profiles to automatically adding it to the guestbook entries immediately, Perl and Java and CGI scripts can make a web programmer's life easier.

Choosing which method depends on your level of programming or how proficient you feel you are with your current HTML or WYSIWYG editor. Using any of the following websites for HTML sources for a guestbook can save you time and help you learn how to program a guestbook.

HTML Source for a Guestbook

  • For a basic set of HTML codes, go to HTML Code. You can download the code in a file that you can import into a program or you can copy and paste it directly into the program you use. Since the code is an older set of instructions, you will want to make sure that you go through and edit anything that makes it current and relevant to you. There is also a PERL program that you can use, which might work better for some programs. Again, it is available for copy and paste.
  • The code on Guestbook has an explanation of how it works, so if you need to modify it slightly, you can. For example, you can change where the text goes, how you want to name the headers and the title of the page.
  • If you feel a template suits you more because you think you might need to edit the guestbook drastically to fit your needs, then take a look at the template at HTML Source for a Guestbook Template. Your first task should be to download Velocity, which is a template engine used to create the HTML code listed on that site. It's an easier way to work with the HTML code, especially if you have no idea what HTML commands mean. Instructions are well written and get very detailed and help explain what is going on in each of the blocks of code. This can help you modify the HTML code to your web page.
  • For some simple codes to add a guestbook, go to Nauvoo.net. You can choose from a simple guestbook and two guestbooks with different positions for the input form and a guestbook that also includes a survey. You can easily change the survey in seconds to something that fits your website. The codes are copy and paste and none of them run more than 40 lines.

HTML Versus PERL

HTML is a little easier to understand because many of the tags (commands within the ) are self-explanatory. Combined with HTML, Perl is very powerful and is mostly used to work with files. Like some of the guestbook codes above, some HTML codes work in conjunction with Perl to create a page the user sees and saves what they write without any complex commands needed by you or the visitor.
