Helvetica Font Download Free

From LoveToKnow Web-Design

Getting a Helvetica font download free might just be as simple as activating it in your word processor. Helvetica is considered a common font, but some word processors may not have it available initially, so locating one for download is the next option.

Helvetica History

The Helvetica font is a sans serif font, which means the characters have clean lines with no tabs or ticks protruding from the edges, unlike Times New Roman. Helvetica means "Swiss" and it originated from Max Miedinger. In its early days in the 1950's and 60's, the font was extremely popular and was used for simple text that was different for the time. Over the years, the font lessened in popularity because everyone jumped on the Helvetica bandwagon and it became so used that it was no longer different. Many of the sans serif fonts used in newspapers and magazines and other media are based off of Helvetica. A Helvetica rip-off you may be familiar with is the "Arial" font, which is available in any Microsoft word processing product.

Where to Find the Helvetica Font Download Free

Most of the font websites you visit will have Helvetica available for download, but you have to purchase it from the creators. The popular vendors are companies like Adobe and Linotype. There are a few sites you can go to get the Helvetica font download free.

  • At Font Seek you find a huge listing of Helvetica fonts for purchase, but if you scroll all the way down, there is a listing under the heading "Free Helvetica Fonts on the Web". There are four links you can click on: one includes the general font and the other three are variations like Bold, Condensed Stressed and Condensed Destressed. The four sites are in Japanese, but most browsers should be able to translate the page for you. If your browser can't translate it, then copy and paste the link into Google Translate to get a close approximation. That should be good enough to figure out the download link, which is near the middle of the page depending on your browser.

Alternatives to Helvetica

  • A Helvetica-like font you may be familiar with is the "Arial" font, which is available in any Microsoft word processing product. Most consumers and even some professional typesetters have a hard time telling the two fonts apart with a simple glance and general reading. There are really only a few differences on a couple letters that you can make out, on extreme study.
  • For a Helvetica font that is as close to Helvetica as any other, try out Coolvetica at My Fonts. You'll see a good selection of Coolvetica fonts that you pay for, but if you search through the list, you see many are free to download.

Why Use the Helvetica Font

Here are a few reasons why you might want to consider using the Helvetica font:

  1. The Helvetica font is easy on the eyes because of its straight lines with no flair or embellishments.
  2. Also, this font is very compatible if you use different word processors, browsers, or operating systems.
  3. Lastly, the Helvetica font is scalable. This means that if you increase or decrease the font size, it won't distort or look funny. Serif fonts sometimes have this issue if they aren't created as such.
  4. You will also find a large selection of different styles of Helvetica fonts that take on properties of other fonts. If you go to Search Free Fonts and type in "Helvetica" in the search bar, you will have a listing of over 400 different versions of the font. The all retain the characteristics of Helvetica, but the style may be altered slightly to give it a fresh look.

Free Helvetica Font Download

Finding a Helvetica font as a free download can be a challenge, so if you absolutely don't need the original Helvetica, then consider the alternatives: some people can't even tell the difference.
