Web Host Administration Software
From LoveToKnow Web-Design
Running your own hosting service, for yourself or others, is an intensive job that's made much simpler by using web host administration software.
Hosting Your Own Websites
While it can be difficult, sometimes, to go through the trouble of hosting your own website, it is an excellent way to see how the technology works. There are several circumstances where hosting your own website makes perfect sense:
- If traditional web hosts won’t tolerate the content that you have to offer under their terms of service.
- You don’t mind paying the price for your own very fast, professional grade home or office Internet connection.
- You prefer acting as your own web host administrator.
- You simply want to learn how the technology works.
- You just really want to do it yourself.
You can host your website on a Windows PC (probably your easiest solution) as well as other computers loaded with Mac OS, UNIX and Linux. If you want to host your own websites you will need:
- A dedicated computer to limit security risks to your own personal setup
- Broadband connection, such as a cable modem or DSL
- DNS Hostname for your Internet connection
- Static local IP address for your connection within your network
- Setup your router to forward connections to port 80 (the HTTP port)
- Set your firewall to accept connections to port 80
- Get a server program such as Apache or Windows IIS (available on Windows XP Professional)
- Test your server from your personal computer
- Replace the default homepage for your new site
- Test your server from a computer that is not on your network
Now that you have your computer working as a server and everything going smoothly, it is time to simplify things a little more by installing web host administration software.

The following programs are just a small sampling of programs that are available for to you use:

The program can also be used for smaller operations without worry. DTC is a web-based GUI panel that simplifies all of the annoying tasks of administration and accounting. You can easily create sub domains, SSH, E-Mail, mail lists, FTP accounts and more. The program uses a MySQL database to contain all of the pertinent information of the host server.
- Positive Software: This company offers a program known as H-Sphere. This software package offers many advanced features, including a very sophisticated billing system. This program was designed to work on several servers, and can be scaled up in order to do more for web, mail, DNS and database applications without any servers going down.
- Ingeniux: This software program, offered by Ingeniux, allows you to let your customers (or yourself) update pages in minutes without actually having any technical skills. It’s easy to use and install, built with businesses in mind and even has built in features that can make your sites get better search engine rankings.
